Cow Elk Flips The Script On Attacking Wolf At Yellowstone National Park

When the hunter becomes the hunted... In 1995, wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park, following over a hundred years of hunting and trapping which decimated the population. During that time, another popular Yellowstone animal, the majestic elk, thrived and their population absolutely exploded. Without a predator to keep them in check, the elk wreaked havoc on the landscape. These days, the park has both a healthy population of wolves and elk, and millions of people flock to Yellowstone each year to see them in action. Outdoor guide Bo Welden (out of Wyoming) recently found himself with a front row seat. In the video, you can see a lone black wolf making a run on a cow elk, looking to score a meal. Granted, wolves generally rely on the entire pack to take down a elk, combining their strength, speed and stamina as a group to take down a big elk. But this fellas was hungry, and at the beginning, it looked like he might just be able to do it himself. Until the cow made it back to the herd... Once she gets back to the herd, the tables turn, and the elk go on the offensive. She charges after the wolf, looking to stomp the life out of him, and make no mistake, and elk kick can be devastating. She gets a few licks in, and the wolf quickly revaluates its decision and abandons the hunt. Bo sums up the difficulty of trying to take down an elk in the caption: “Have you ever tried to catch and kill your food with your face? Plus your food runs 30+ miles an hour, one stomp from a powerful hoof kills/injures you, and has a fierce motherly instinct!
