Firefighters in Rural Retreat receive new air packs
WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — One Wythe County fire department is celebrating after receiving new, vital equipment for its crew. The Rural Retreat Fire Department received 18 MSA firefighter air packs, which provide breathing air to firefighters performing interior fire attack, rescue and hazardous materials response. The department said the packs are essential to firefighter safety.

Preliminary data indicates six individuals lost their lives in six traffic crashes during the five-day statistical counting period designated for the July 4, 2024, holiday. Of those who died, one was a pedestrian struck in a hit-and-run crash, four were drivers and one was a passenger. The fatal crashes took place in the City of Richmond and the counties of Bedford, Charles City, Henrico and Wythe counties. Two of the fatal crashes occurred in Bedford County. During the two-day statistical counting period for July 4, 2023, traffic crashes claimed seven lives on Virginia’s highways.*

Man arrested after pursuit in Wythe/Smyth counties
Smyth County deputies arrested Wesley Adam Keesee of Shenandoah, Va., was arrested and transported to the Abingdon Regional Jail following a pursuit on a stolen sport bike. The Wythe County Sheriff’s Office initiated the pursuit and then Smyth County units and Virginia State Police (VSP) became involved when the pursuit made its way to Interstate 81. The pursuit continued to Duncan Road in Smyth County, where Keesee became cornered at the end of a driveway and was arrested. Keesee was wanted in Page County, Va., with felony drug-related warrants. Multiple new charges have been added to Keesee’s rap sheet including trespassing, felony evading, and other related charges.
