    EWL tops the Wytheville Waves

    WYTHEVILLE– Elkin Wet Lightning Swim Team traveled up the mountain very early on a warm and sunny Saturday morning, July 6, to compete with the Wytheville Waves at McWane public pool on the edge of downtown Wytheville. With many swimmers swimming new strokes, new events and several swimming up in age, the Wet Lightning team sailed to victory.

    In the girls 8 and under 25 meter breaststroke event, Adelynn Manigault (36.24) and Ember Dobson (43.65) snagged a 2nd and 3rd place finish while teammate Nora Corcoran (1:10.80) came in 5th place picking up points for her team. In the boys' same event, Matthew Gentry (25.70), Jonah Johnson (32.21) and his brother Luke (42.60) swept the event with the top 3 finishes. In the girls 9-10 age bracket, Hadley Gaddis (27.46) grabbed the gold finish while teammates Audrey Corcoran (27.54) and Lucy Willard (28.22) finished in 2nd and 3rd places. Ester Dickerson (28.84) and Haven Simmons (32.10) rounded out the event with a 5th and 6th place finish respectively. Elkin’s Ricky Royall, the only EWL swimmer in the boys” 9-10 age group, nabbed the 2nd place finish. Swimming in the girls’ 11-12 age group, Leyna Simmons (54.00) and Lizzy Charles (55.36) claimed the top two spots. Annabelle Dickerson (59.73), Shayla Ange (1:01.18) and Johannah Johnson (1:02.85) wrapped up the event with 4th, 5th and 6th place finishes. EJ Lowder (1:04.17) claimed the 2nd place finish in the same event for the boys. Mikayla Dickerson (43.30) grabbed the 1st place finish in the girls’ 13-14 age group while teammates Layla Edwards (52.49) and Brylie Ange (1:04.59) picked up 3rd and 5th place finishes. Bodhi Cummins (33.76) owned the boys” 13-14 age group with a very fast first place finish. In the girls’ 15-18 age group, Sarika Hatcher (44.63) picked up the 3rd place finish while Elissa Dickerson (45.23) touched the wall right behind her teammate to grab the 4th place finish. Swimming for the boys, Evan Baker (41.63) and Michael Tragone (44.12) picked up the 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

    In the rigorous butterfly event, Elkin’s Jordan Pardue (32.99) grabbed the top spot while Carter Allgood (35.11) came in 3rd place in the girls’ 8 & under event. In the boys' same age group race, Matthew Gentry (24.06) and Leo Storie (24.80) picked up the top two spots. In the girls’ 9-10 age group, Hadley Gaddis (27.39), Makaila Schosser (28.32) and Ellie Baker (32.86) came in 3rd, 4th and 5th places. Myles Edwards (25.91) grabbed the gold in the boys’ 9-10 age group. In the girls’ 11-12 race, Adelyn Reed (43.76) and Addie Baker (49.83) picked up gold and silver finishes. Amara Simmons (36.26) claimed a 1st place finish in the girls’ 13-14 age group while Dylan Zamudio (35.96) did the same in the boys’ same age group. Swimming in the boys 15-18 age group, Mark Davis (31.20), Evan Baker (33.51) and Michael Tragone (36.34) swept the event with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes.
