YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Many people probably don’t like the idea of taking cold showers, but can they be good for you? Are there any health benefits to standing and shivering under that flow?

A cold shower may offer some relief after a workout, but does it do anything else?

“I think some of the most supportive literature is in decreasing pain and inflammation, improving muscle recovery after exercise,” said Cleveland Clinic Dr. Melissa Young.

Will it help with weight loss?

    That is iffy.

Even though your metabolism temporarily increases in response to the frigid water, it’s not your best route to lose weight.

Some evidence suggests that cold showers may boost your immune system, but remember, this does impact your sympathetic nervous system and so anyone who has heart issues should avoid cold showers.

For those who want to try a cold shower after the gym or waking up in the morning, doctors recommend slowly easing into the colder water. It’s not a polar plunge.
