TRUMBULL CO., Ohio (WKBN) – In Trumbull County, voters in the 64th House District will be deciding a contested race for representation in the State House.

Republican incumbent Nick Santucci and Democrat Lauren Mathews are running to represent the 64th District in the State House of Representatives.

“We need to continue the good work that we’ve already started and I’m proud to serve my first term, and I plan to get reelected and get back to work immediately after the election,” Santucci said.

“We need somebody who actually shows up for our community, for all parts of the community. Part of me running was, let’s do things that matter for the everyday person,” Mathews said.

Santucci is seeking a second term in office. He says he’s proud of his work to bring funding back to the area to clean up blight and remediate brownfields, plus legislation he’s introduced.

“The first one is a human trafficking bill, where we will lock up individuals that are participating in any human trafficking activity for life,” he said. “I’ve also introduced legislation to try to solve the workforce development challenges that we have here.”

This is Mathews’ first time running for office. She’s been a social worker for 29 years. Should she be elected, her priorities include increased training availability for people who want to enter the workforce or get better jobs.

“I find it very important that we actually make sure that our school vouchers — which are our taxpayer dollars being used in private schools — make sure that we hold those schools accountable for the same things public schools are held accountable for,” Mathews said.

Both explain why voters should pick them to represent the district in the state legislature.

“I feel like we have more work to do. We’ve introduced bills, I campaigned on last General Assembly, I’m hoping to continue to introduce those same bills this General Assembly,” Santucci said.

“I’m going to be present here. Win or lose, I’m still going to fight for Trumbull County no matter the outcome of the election because this is home,” Mathews said.
