County hopes for $3 million from feds to house homeless

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Mahoning County Commissioners will be looking to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for help providing for some of the Valley’s homeless.

Commissioners will be applying for close to $3 million to provide funding for local non-profit organizations such as the YWCA, Catholic Charities and Beatitude House to assist lower-income residents and families.

“They help the person find housing. If they don’t have something on site, they work with local landlords and provide rental assistance so that person doesn’t have to pay the rent or they would pay a modified rent based on income,” said Colleen Kosta, with Mahoning County Continuum of Care.

Officials hope to receive the funds sometime next spring.
