A drug-related arrest in Yadkin County last month has prompted public service announcements from the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office.

On Feb. 20, detectives with the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office ACE Team conducted a knock and talk investigation at 1613 Beechwood Road in Yadkinville. The interaction resulted in a search warrant being executed at the residence. During the search of the residence detectives and deputies located 12 pounds of marijuana in various forms including marijuana bud, vape pens with cartridges, wax/hashish, and edibles. Detectives also located 14 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, three firearms, large amounts of drug paraphernalia, and $5,787 in U.S. currency. As a result of these items being found an arrest was made on John Talmadge Glenn, age 57, who resides at the residence and was the target in the investigation.

Glenn was arrested and charged with the following:

    • 2 felony counts of Trafficking a Schedule VI Controlled Substance (Marijuana)

    • 1 felony count of Possession with Intent to Manufacture Sell and Deliver a Schedule VI Controlled Substance (Marijuana)

    • 1 felony count of Possession with Intent to Manufacture Sell and Deliver a Schedule I Controlled Substance (Psilocybin Mushrooms)

    • 1 felony count of Maintaining a Dwelling for the Sale of Controlled Substances

    • 1 misdemeanor count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Glenn received a $25,000 secured bond and was scheduled to appear in court in Yadkin County on Feb. 28.

    Public Service Announcements issued

In the wake of the arrest and another drug arrest last month, the Sheriff’s Office posted two public service announcements on its Facebook page about packaging for marijuana edibles that appears similiar to candy packages as well as energy drink can “secret stash” containers used to hide drugs.

The post warned about “candy packaging that looks very similar to well known brands. Examples would be the gummies and packages that look like Sour Patch and Nerds candies. In the case of the package labeled Nerds the brand name and associated images are used.”

“If you see that your child has what appears to be an innocuous package of candy but something seems a little off…take a moment to read the labeling. Many of these types of items use terms like “rocket”, “dank”, “medicated”, etc. along with the normal name or description of the candy. Sometimes they will also mimic a well known look: the IYKYK (If You Know You Know) bar versus a Hershey’s bar, or a Wonka Bar that has the cannabis leaf markings added to it.”

A second PSA warned of soda cans or other “seemingly normal looking household items available to consumers for the purpose of hiding belongings.”

“A Google search using the terms ‘hideaway container’, ‘diversion safe,’ or ‘secret stash’ will produce many examples,” reads the post. “Some of the items that can be easily purchased are hair brushes, lint rollers, soda cans, soup cans, even a can of WD-40. However, unlike the real items, these copycat containers are made to hide other contents in plain sight. Like many other things these legal items can also be used to hide contraband or for illegal purposes. In addition to ready-made versions of these items, the image below shows energy drink cans that were turned into homemade hideaway containers. These were seized from adults hiding narcotics.”
