    Man dies after hitting dead deer on highway near Yankton, officials say

    YANKTON COUNTY, S.D. (KCAU) — A 30-year-old man died and another person was left with life-threatening injuries after a crash caused by a dead deer near Yankton.

    According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the crash took place on SD Highway 50 about seven miles west of Yankton Tuesday at 5:31 a.m.

    Officials said that based on preliminary crash information, the 30-year-old man was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Colbalt west on Highway 50 and hit a dead deer laying on the road. He then lost control of the vehicle and entered into the eastbound lane.

    At that time, another man, 52, was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Colbalt east when the two then collided. Both vehicles came to a rest in the south ditch.

    The 30-year-old man died after sustaining fatal injuries from the crash. The 52-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.

    The release said that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

    The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
