NASCAR Cup Series driver Austin Dillon.

It's safe to say that Sunday's controversial NASCAR finish at Richmond is garnering a lot of attention.

After Austin Dillon turned both Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin on the final lap en route to his first win of 2024, NASCAR's Elton Sawyer spoke to the media about potential penalties for Dillon.

"Our sport has been a contact sport for a long time," Sawyer said. "We always hear, 'Where's the line, did someone cross the line?' I would say that, the last lap, was awful close to the line. We'll take a look at all the available resources from audio to video. We'll listen to crew chiefs and drivers, and if anything rises to a level that we feel like we need to penalize, we'll do that on Tuesday."

When asked if NASCAR would take Dillon's win away, Sawyer made it seem like stripping Dillon of his victory — and hence, his spot in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs — isn't in the cards.

"Historically, it's not in our DNA to take races away," he said. "That's not to say that going forward, this wouldn't start to set a precedent."

As Sawyer noted, any penalties for Dillon and the No. 3 team would come out with NASCAR's penalty report on Tuesday.

The NASCAR Cup Series' next race will be held next Sunday at the Michigan International Speedway. The FireKeepers Casino 400 will go green shortly after 2:30 p.m. ET, with coverage provided on USA Network, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Chris Buescher is the race's defending winner.
