New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso (20) attempts to pick off Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson (2) in the first inning at Citi Field.

The New York Mets scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night to cut their deficit to two runs.

In one disastrous blooper in the top of the ninth, New York's defense gave back two of the runs and made its submission for the worst play of the year. The Mets eventually lost 9-5.

It's fitting that the Mets' horror show occurred during a mid-August contest, as the Little League World Series was being played. At this stage in the Williamsport, Pennsylvania tournament, however, there aren't many instances where fans would see the youngsters struggle like Carlos Mendoza's club did following Gunnar Henderson's fly ball.

As Tim Britton of The Athletic noted, the defensive disaster resulted in four throws (two from outfielder Brandon Nimmo) and no outs.

"We’ve just got to stop the play," Mendoza said, per Britton . "Once you start throwing the ball all over the place, it’s not a good thing."
