New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

The New England Patriots are one of just two teams (Pittsburgh Steelers) who have yet to announce their Week 1 starting quarterback.

It doesn't seem like that is going to change until after the team's preseason finale against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, either.

On Wednesday, head coach Jerod Mayo revealed that rookie Drake Maye has shortened the gap between him and veteran Jacoby Brissett, but that the competition is still ongoing.

"You come into camp, and you want to have an idea of how it's going. It's still a competition, and Jacoby is still QB1," Mayo said , via Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "It's a competition amongst all the guys on the field, including the quarterback spot."

While Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has impressed, Brissett still seems to have the inside track to be the Week 1 starter. Maye is not so sure that's the case, however.

"I'm not 100 percent sure," Maye said , via Chad Graff of The Athletic. "But Jacoby has played great ... and been a great teacher for me."

Mayo's confidence in Maye has been growing but he's not ready to make a decision quite yet.

"100 percent I think he's ready to run a huddle," Mayo added.

Mayo noted that "all the quarterbacks are playing" in the preseason finale to have one last opportunity to state each of their cases.

Maye is planning on taking advantage of whatever reps he gets to do just that.

"I think I'm just going to take advantage of my opportunities," Maye added , via Mike Reiss of ESPN. "I think Jacoby has done a great job. He's a great player, great teammate. He's been working with the ones the whole time. So, I'm excited for him. I'm just trying to take every advantage — take advantage of the reps I do get — and when I'm in there, try to have some fun."

This preseason, Maye has completed 8-of-14 passes for 66 yards and rushed four times for 15 yards with a touchdown through two games.
