    Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson.

The Denver Broncos believe Zach Wilson still has untapped potential after the quarterback survived cutdown day on Tuesday.

With rookie Bo Nix winning the starting QB job in training camp, it was unclear whether the Broncos would keep Wilson and fellow backup Jarrett Stidham. Ultimately, Denver general manager George Paton felt the former No. 2 overall pick's upside was too hard to ignore.

"He has starter tools all over," Paton told the media Tuesday . "It's been pretty cool just watching him with really no expectations. He can just go out there and play football. He has all the traits. He has all the starting traits in the world."

Despite some flashes in three seasons with the Jets, Wilson flopped in New York. The 25-year-old went 12-21 in 33 regular-season starts, throwing more interceptions (25) than passing TDs (23) and posting a below-average 73.2 passer rating.

It seems Broncos head coach Sean Payton, a QB whisperer, helped Wilson make strides during training camp and preseason. In three games, he completed 28-of-44 passes for 397 yards and three TDs, registering a solid 115.4 passer rating.

No. 12 overall pick Nix — who logged a superb 116.7 passer rating in two preseason games — seems like the guy for the Broncos. Paton could be using Wilson as trade bait. QB-needy teams (the Minnesota Vikings?) may be willing to offer a decent package for him.

The Broncos also may feel he's a better backup option than Stidham, who struggled in three preseason games. The 28-year-old completed 13-of-22 passes for 130 yards and two interceptions, recording a subpar 38.1 passer rating.

Regardless, Denver may be giving Wilson his last chance in the NFL. He must continue to take advantage of it.
