Kyle Shanahan has concerning admission about Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams

Any positivity surrounding potential contract extensions for Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams sounds like it'll be paused for the time being. With Week 1 just around the corner, the San Francisco 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan are giving their full attention to the New York Jets, and rightfully so.

The status for Week 1 of both Aiyuk and Williams remains up in the air. On Wednesday, Shanahan was asked about both players and admitted he hadn't spoken to Williams recently while Aiyuk was nowhere to be seen during practice.

As Pro Football Talk revealed, Shanahan did say he was optimistic about things working out with Williams but also stated he's focused on preparing for a Week 1 matchup without either player.

“I’m optimistic that things will work out with Trent,” Shanahan said. “I’m not sitting here knowing what day it will be. I mean, we’re getting close to playing a game. So, like, my mind is completely on preparing for a game without those guys. But I feel when two sides want to get a deal done, usually it happens.”

There has been no public update on contract talks from virtually anyone in the organization, or from either player. Aiyuk appeared to be trending toward wearing a different uniform in 2024, and it remains to be seen if there's a realistic chance that a trade could still pan out involving the wide receiver.

Regardless, Shanahan and the 49ers have to prepare for Week 1 with the players in attendance, and the chances of either Aiyuk or Williams playing continue to decline by the day.
