Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell.

No. 10 Florida State was hoping to right the ship after a humbling last-second loss to Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland last week.

The 24-21 defeat was an early obstacle in the Seminoles' quest to avenge their omission from the 2023 College Football Playoff.

Monday night, Boston College — who won a grand total of three ACC games last year — virtually ended Florida State's hopes of making the 2024 expanded playoff, given a one percent chance to run the table by ESPN.

And it wasn't particularly close. Boston College led by multiple scores for most of the night, walking away 28-13 victors in Tallahassee.

According to ESPN , Florida State became the fourth preseason top-10 squad to start 0-2 in the last 10 years.

And it's the third instance in history where a team held a top-10 ranking with a 0-2 record (1967 Texas and 2022 Notre Dame).

The Seminoles also appear well on their way to fulfilling yet another unwanted trend in college football.

If they stumble anywhere else in their remaining schedule — and it's likely they will with the likes of Clemson, Miami and Notre Dame still to come — it could mark the 19th season in the last 21 years that a team ranked in the preseason top-10 finishes outside the top-25 .

In fact, Florida State could be omitted entirely from the Associated Press' first in-season poll by Tuesday.

The Seminoles now have an early bye week and will have their next opportunity to get in the win column on Sept. 14 against Memphis.
