The New York Giants possibly moving on from head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen following the upcoming season became a hot topic almost immediately after the club finished a woeful 2023 campaign at 6-11.
NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY addressed the futures of Daboll and Schoen for a mailbag published on Tuesday.
"He’s not on the hot seat right now in that the Giants want to or are looking to fire him," Hughes wrote about Daboll. "(Giants co-owner John Mara) still believes he's the level of coach that won Coach of the Year honors in 2022. There are concerns with the dysfunction and turmoil that resonated amongst his staff last year, but they’re giving Daboll a chance to evolve and grow. They think he will."
Specifically, Daboll's alleged "madman" demeanor on game days reportedly upset former defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale and current offensive coordinator Mike Kafka throughout last season. Martindale offered his resignation in January, but the Giants blocked the Seattle Seahawks from interviewing Kafka regarding Seattle's offensive coordinator job. New York later elevated Kafka to the position of assistant head coach , but Daboll will be serving as the club's primary offensive play-caller beginning with the Week 1 game against the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday.
"I heard from several sources this offseason that Daboll was openly telling people he knows what could happen if things go south," Hughes continued. "That’s among the reasons he took play-calling back — he’s not getting fired with someone else calling his offense. He’ll go down with his ship."
Meanwhile, Hughes acknowledged that "the pressure on Schoen is mounting, too" because "the fan base and outside media aren’t thrilled with where the roster is" heading into the Minnesota matchup. For an article published on Monday, Hughes predicted that the Giants will finish this season last in the NFC East standings with a record of 4-13.
"While I believe Schoen’s leash is longer than Daboll’s, he’s not completely promised 2025," Hughes wrote on Tuesday. "Everything and anything is on the table if this team wins just three or four games."
The Giants were first linked with former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who earned his first two career Super Bowl rings with Big Blue, this past winter and continue to be mentioned as a potential landing spot for the living legend assuming he intends to coach in 2025. It sounds like whispers about Mara possibly blowing things up will grow louder as soon as next week if the Giants look completely overmatched against the Vikings at MetLife Stadium.
