Chicago White Sox outfielder Miguel Vargas (20) takes a moment after running into outfielder Andrew Benintendi (not pictured) while running down Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Eloy Jiménez (not pictured) second inning fly ball at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The Chicago White Sox had a moment on Tuesday that would have done the Three Stooges proud.

Former White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez was at the plate as the Orioles led, 4-0, with two outs in the bottom of the second. He popped up to shallow left for what should have been the third out of the inning.

Instead, chaos ensued as shortstop Jacob Amaya, third baseman Miguel Vargas and left fielder Andrew Benintendi converged on the ball.

As Orioles broadcaster Kevin Brown stated , "The White Sox have just gone full White Sox." Three runs scored on the play while Jimenez ended up at second. Vargas was not only charged with an error but ended up leaving the game with an abrasion on his right eye after colliding with Benintendi.

Starting pitcher Nate Nastrini faced one more batter, leaving the game having allowed seven runs, four earned, on four hits and six walks while firing a wild pitch. He struck out two, throwing just 30 of his 72 pitches for strikes.

The White Sox's 2024 campaign has been an exercise in futility. Chris Flexen made history in his most recent outing on Monday, the 20th consecutive loss for the White Sox in games he started — breaking a tie with 1909 Washington Senators pitcher Bob Groom. The White Sox set a franchise record with their 107th loss on Sunday. Almost nothing has gone right for the White Sox this season.

The White Sox are just playing out the string at this point. The only question is how soon will they surpass the 1962 Mets as the worst team in modern MLB history. Moments such as that botched pop-up down the left-field line are a microcosm of what has been an unforgettable season.
