Dolphins DC reacts to former Walter Payton Man of the Year's involvement in Tyreek Hill detainment

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said on Tuesday that he was shocked to see defensive end Calais Campbell detained during Sunday's pregame incident between wideout Tyreek Hill and Miami-Dade police officers.

Hill was pulled over for speeding while approaching Hard Rock Stadium ahead of the Dolphins' Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Body camera footage was released on Monday night, showing the eight-time Pro Bowl pass-catcher being pulled out of his car, forced to the pavement and put in handcuffs.

Campbell arrived at the scene soon after his teammate was detained, was told to leave and approached the officers with his arms raised in the air.

The 2019 Walter Payton Man of the Year was ultimately detained, though both players were eventually released and played in Sunday's victory.

Hill has a history of legal troubles, dating back to his college days at Oklahoma State and his early NFL seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to domestic assault and battery by strangulation following a 2014 incident and was sentenced to three years of probation, an anger-management course, a yearlong batterer's course and a domestic abuse evaluation. Hill also was investigated in 2019 for a child abuse report but never faced any charges.

He was also under investigation last year following an alleged assault of a Miami Beach marina employee, though no charges were filed.

Sunday's event has sparked heavy backlash for the South Beach officers, however, with many arguing that excessive force was used against Hill.

Campbell, on the other hand, has gained a reputation as one of the good guys across the league through his 17-year career.

The six-time Pro Bowler not only won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award five years ago but also earned the 2023 NFLPA Alan Page Community Award as well. Campbell signed with the Dolphins in June after spending last season with the Atlanta Falcons.

He ranks first among all active players in career tackles for loss (177) and is tied for first with Bears tight end Marcedes Lewis in games started (226).
