Cardinals QB Kyler Murray's comments about WR Marvin Harrison Jr.'s targets may raise eyebrows

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. don't seem to be gelling.

In a 34-28 Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills, No. 4 overall pick Harrison was targeted three times and only had one reception for four yards . Murray didn't blame himself for his quiet day.

"As a quarterback, you're obviously going through your reads," Murray recently said via Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports. "Sometimes the ball goes to [Harrison], but that's not my job. I have a sense and feel for guys when they don't get the ball, but I leave that up to [offensive coordinator Drew Petzing]. He tells me, 'Don't worry about that type of stuff. Just keep playing your game and get the ball to where the ball is supposed to go.'"

Morgan added that Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said Buffalo's defensive game plan prevented them from targeting Harrison more. However, it's surprising that Murray doesn't prioritize getting him the ball.

Arizona likely drafted the Ohio State product to serve as a No. 1 WR for Murray. In three seasons with the Buckeyes, he finished with the third-most TD catches (31) in program history.

To cut Murray some slack, it will probably take time to develop chemistry with Harrison, and Petzing may have called plays where he wasn't the primary route runner. On Tuesday, the OC signaled he's planning to give the 22-year-old wideout more touches.

"But he's one of our top players; certainly, he's on the forefront of our minds in terms of getting him the ball," Petzing said, per Morgan. "I think they did some good things to take him away, and certainly, I could've tried to call some plays to get him a little bit more involved early."

Whether Murray and Harrison start developing a rapport in a Week 2 home game vs. the Los Angeles Rams is a storyline that bears attention.
