San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.

There will be no last-minute lineup surprise for Christian McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers for their Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings. The team has already ruled out the star running back due to a calf injury and Achilles tendonitis, meaning he will miss his second straight game to open the 2024 NFL season.

Even worse, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the team is considering putting McCaffrey on the IR. Such a move would keep him out for at least an additional four weeks.

McCaffrey has been dealing with the issue for most of training camp but seemed to be on track to play in the team's Week 1 game against the New York Jets. But just before kickoff McCaffrey was a surprising inactive and did not play in the team's 32-19 win.

He was replaced in the starting lineup by backup Jordan Mason. Mason had an incredible night, rushing for 147 yards on 28 carries and scoring a touchdown.

Mason has played sparingly over the past three seasons but has done well when called upon. The 49ers offense is set up for a backup running back to succeed given the line play, skill position players on the perimeter and Shanahan's scheme. It is entirely possible that Mason can continue to hold his own in that role as long the 49ers need him to start.

Still, they would certainly prefer to have McCaffrey back in the lineup to have their best possible lineup on the field.

McCaffrey is the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year and one of the most dynamic offensive players in the league.

The injury issue, however, is a harsh reminder as to why a lot of teams do not like investing big assets into running backs, especially as they get closer to their 30s. Injuries begin to take their toll. The 49ers will just have to wait and see how this plays out with McCaffrey in the week ahead.
