Insider addresses if Dolphins could trade for Steelers' Russell Wilson

    Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson.

It was reported on Sunday that Tom Brady leaving the commentary booth to play for the Miami Dolphins this fall is "not going to happen" as Miami starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa works to recover from setbacks related to his latest concussion that he suffered in this past Thursday's 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

For a piece published on Sunday night, ESPN's Dan Graziano poured cold water over the idea that the Dolphins could trade for Pittsburgh Steelers veteran Russell Wilson after Justin Fields guided the Steelers to a 2-0 start as Wilson continued to recover from a lingering calf issue.

"It's not as if Fields is lighting up the scoreboard," Graziano explained. "Per ESPN Research, he's averaging only 6.1 air yards per attempt this season. Maybe Pittsburgh still thinks a healthy Wilson is the better choice, when and if he's finally healthy."

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said last week before Pittsburgh earned an ugly 13-6 win at the Denver Broncos on Sunday that Wilson was on track to get the Pittsburgh starting job back when he's cleared to return to in-game action from the calf injury because the club "believes Wilson's command of the offense is stronger" than Fields'.

On Monday, Steelers reporter Mike DeFabo of The Athletic noted that Fields "hasn’t yet wrestled the starting job from Wilson" despite going 2-0 as Pittsburgh's QB1.

According to ESPN stats, Fields went into Monday ranked 19th in the NFL among qualified players with a 45.9 adjusted QBR, 13th with a 94.4 passer rating and 27th with 273 passing yards on the season. He tossed just one touchdown pass and no interceptions over his two victories, and he also added 84 rushing yards on 22 carries.

On Monday, the Dolphins signed veteran Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad to serve as a backup for Skylar Thompson with Tagovailoa still in the concussion protocol. Tagovailoa reportedly wants to return to the lineup as soon as possible, and it is worth mentioning that Wilson's contract includes a no-trade clause.

Even if the Dolphins learned before Tuesday that Tagovailoa won't play again this season, there's no guarantee Wilson would want to relocate to Miami after he signed a team-friendly deal with the Steelers this past offseason.
