Florida State HC Mike Norvell may need to roll with QB DJ Uiagalelei

Florida State Seminoles quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.

It's been a rough start for Florida State in 2024 after a fantastic 2023, where they went unbeaten in the regular season and won the ACC Championship. The Seminoles now sit at 0-3, with losses to Georgia Tech, Boston College and Memphis, a Group of 5 team.

Head coach Mike Norvell is under scrutiny from fans , yes, for the performances, but mainly due to bringing in quarterback DJ Uiagalelei from the transfer portal. Fans are unhappy, with plenty calling for Norvell to drop Uiagalelei. Looking at the other quarterbacks in the room, is there a better option?

Is DJ Uiagalelei the only choice for Norvell at quarterback?

The offense clearly is an issue for Florida State, failing to pass 300 offensive yards in any of their three games. Uiagalelei is not a dual-threat quarterback, meaning the run game becomes even more significant to get the passing game going. There is just one team averaging fewer yards than the Seminoles a game this season (52.0), and that's Miami (OH) with 32.0, playing one less game. That has not helped Uiagalelei, but he hasn't been great himself, averaging 222.0 passing yards per game, throwing more touchdowns (one) than interceptions (two).

Fans are calling for a quarterback change, but looking behind Uiagalelei, the options look questionable. The No. 3 quarterback is true freshman Luke Kromenhoek, a four-star prospect with zero college experience. Kromenhoek may be highly thought of, but is Norvell really going to throw a true freshman into the current situation where the offense is floundering? It's likely not, which leaves the only option as redshirt freshman Brock Glenn.

Glenn is a 2023 four-star quarterback who saw significant action in his first season when Jordan Travis went down injured. He started the season's final two games, the ACC Championship Game and the Orange Bowl against Georgia. Glenn struggled in both games, having combined s tat figures of 17-of-47 for 194 passing yards and two interceptions . He only completed 37.3 percent of his passes across the 2023 season. The running game bailed him out in the ACC Championship Game, but the ground game couldn't replicate that against the Bulldogs in the bowl game.

It was a baptism of fire for Glenn, a true freshman, facing a Georgia defense especially. It could have shaped him into a better quarterback heading into year two. With Norvell shooting for the transfer portal to bring in Uiagalelei and the former Oregon State QB winning the starter's job, it possibly spoke that Norvell thought he was not ready yet.

Fans will argue that you must give one of the backups a chance. However, Glenn has not shown enough, and Kromenhoek is just a true freshman in Week 4 of his first season.

The depth chart for Florida State's Week 4 game against California has come out . Uiagalelei is listed as the starter again in front of Glenn and Kromenhoek. After the offensive performances from the Californian-born quarterback and the offense, there might be limited trust in the two other players to turn this 0-3 slide around.

If Florida State fails to win against Cal, Norvell may be forced to change Brock Glenn to quarterback. As of now, Noles' fans will hope Uiagalelei can find his form from last season, where he threw five touchdowns for Oregon State against the Golden Bears.
