New York Mets designated hitter Jesse Winker.

Lip readers theorized that Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames told New York Mets outfielder/designated hitter Jesse Winker to meet him in the parking lot following their shouting match in Game 1 of the teams' NL wild-card series on Tuesday.

Adames confirmed to Jon Heyman of the New York Post ahead of the Brewers' season-ending Game 3 loss to the Mets on Thursday that he hoped to discuss the matter with Winker Tuesday night.

Heyman's report revealed what sources told him caused the initial heated interaction .

Milwaukee hosted all three games of the NL wild-card series and welcomed New York to town for a three-game set on Sept. 27, near the end of the regular season.

Brewers starting pitcher Frankie Montas drilled Winker with a first-pitch 97 mph fastball in the top of the fourth, which stayed on the 2021 All-Star's mind until the teams' playoff meeting.

Winker kicked off the Mets' scoring in their 8-4 win on Tuesday with a two-run triple in the top of the second inning. After the play, he and Adames were seen jawing at each other.

Winker gave a bizarre, if not questionable, excuse for the exchange, saying he wasn't shouting at his former teammate but was "chewing gum."

"Rounding first, I was watching (Pete Alonso) and (Mets third base coach Mike Sarbaugh) the whole time. Watching them. As soon as I saw Sarby’s windmill, I put my attention and focus on second, and was like, I am going to third. That’s all that happened," the 31-year-old said, per The Athletic's Will Sammon .

Adames said that he didn't believe Winker's explanation.

"I don't know what was going through his head, but he started saying some stuff and I said something back. I think that's the kind of player he is. It is what it is," the infielder said . "It was surprising that he would say some stuff. But I guess that’s part of his personality. It was a little bit of a surprise to me. But we don’t back off."

Per Heyman's report , Adames said that when the pair were "chirping at each other" during Tuesday's action, he told Winker to meet him in the parking lot after the contest. His 2023 Milwaukee teammate didn't show up, however.

Adames told Heyman that Winker "just started yelling to me straight up. In the heat of the moment, I’m not going to back down. So we were just chirping. I don’t know what he was mad about."

The Brewers-Mets series and Adames-Winker sideshow may be over, but now New York gets ready to face one of its biggest rivals in the NLDS, which will begin on Saturday when they face the Philadelphia Phillies.
