Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' radio show comments a worrying sign for team's future

Jerry Jones' hubris is once again ruining the Cowboys. On Tuesday, the longtime Cowboys owner argued with 105.3 The Fan radio hosts for having the audacity to hold him accountable after another embarrassing home loss.

The Cowboys lost 47-9 to the Lions on Sunday, four weeks after getting blown out at home 44-19 by the Saints. Dallas was also drubbed by the Packers, 48-32, in the 2023 wild-card round at AT&T Stadium. In Week 3 this season, it trailed the Ravens 28-6, eventually losing 28-25.

When questioned about how the team's inactivity during the offseason has been felt in its disappointing start, Jones threw a fit.

"Your job isn't to let me go over all the reasons that I did something," Jones retorted.

"That's not your job. I'll get somebody else to ask these questions. I'm not kidding," he added.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe offered a sharp rebuke of Jones' comments on ESPN's "First Take."

"I hate, I detest, I despise someone that will prey on the weak... If the Cowboys don't win... another game as long as Jerry Jones is the owner, I'll be the happiest man in the world," Sharpe shared.

The criticism aimed at Jones by the 105.3 radio hosts and Sharpe is warranted.

As always, Jones, who also acts as the team's de facto general manager, wants all of the credit for the Cowboys' success and none of the criticism for their failings. Based on how he and his son, Stephen Jones, constructed the team's 2024 roster, more losses are likely.

Following the team's Week 7 bye, Dallas (3-3) plays the 49ers (3-3), who have won three in a row in the series, including twice in the playoffs and a 42-10 romp in Week 5 last season.

The Cowboys then play the Falcons (4-2), Eagles (3-2), Texans (5-1) and Commanders (4-2) before their annual Thanksgiving game against the Giants (2-4) on Nov. 28.

Jones railed against the radio hosts for criticizing his inaction during the offseason in hindsight as if people didn't know in March that Dallas had deficiencies at defensive tackle and running back that needed correcting.

This season, the Cowboys rank last in rushing yards (463) and yards per attempt (3.5). Per ESPN , they're also 25th in pass-rush win rate and 30th in run-stop win rate.

Jones' lack of personal accountability has contributed significantly to the Cowboys' Super Bowl drought. Since winning their last league championship at the end of the 1995 season, the Cowboys have had three more losing seasons (eight) than playoff wins (five).

Jones couldn't handle sharing the spotlight with former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson during the franchise's dynastic 1990s run, and he has just as big of a problem receiving the brunt of the criticism.

He may disapprove, but as the face of the world's most valuable sports franchise , people notice when he doesn't do his job. It's rich of him to threaten the 105.3 radio hosts for doing theirs.
