Scottie Scheffler wins TOUR Championship, capping off historic, eventful year

The third time was a charm for Scottie Scheffler. After coming up short to win the FedEx Cup the previous two years despite being the No. 1 seed, he finally captured the title and the 2024 TOUR Championship on Sunday, capping off an incredible year.

The 28-year-old shot a final-round 67 (-4), finishing -30 for the tournament, four shots ahead of second-place Collin Morkawa (-26). Though, the day didn't go as smoothly as the score may indicate.

Entering the day with a five-shot lead, Scheffler bogeyed No. 7 early on Sunday before shanking out of the bunker on No. 8 , dropping one above par for the round. However, the 2024 Masters champion bounced back, finishing par or better over the remaining 10 holes, including three birdies (No. 9, No. 10, No. 11) and an eagle (No. 14).

The victory marked the seventh Tour win of the season for Scheffler, the most since Tiger Woods in 2007. Meanwhile, he also tallied his 13th PGA Tour victory, 931 days after recording his first, becoming the fastest to achieve the feat since 1960, beating out the likes of Jack Nicklaus (1,029 days), Woods (1,113 days) and Johnny Miller (1,225), per Justin Ray of The Athletic .

Adding the $25M purse he earned winning the FedEx Cup, Scheffler pocketed $54.2M on the course this season, the most in golf . Furthermore, his career earnings sky-rocketed to $96.7M, per CBS Sports , the second-most all-time behind Woods ($120.9M).

Scheffler ends the year as the world's No. 1 ranked golfer. He added a Players Championship, another Masters title , an emotional Olympic gold medal victory and now a TOUR Championship to his resume.

In addition to Scheffler's lucrative and history-making play, it was also an eventful year off the course. In May, he became a father for the first time, weeks before being arrested for refusing a police officer's command while attempting to enter the Valhalla Golf Club , the site of the 2024 PGA Championship.

Through it all, Scheffler embraced success, brushed adversity aside and stayed consistent event after event. The result was one of the best seasons by a golfer in recent memory.

It's safe to say 2024 will be a year Scheffler won't soon forget.
