Watch SUV hit utility pole and begin spinning upside down on dark Massachusetts road

A police officer driving a deserted Cape Cod road at 2 a.m. witnessed an oncoming SUV slam into a utility pole and start “spinning on its roof” as sparks flew overhead like fireworks.

And it was all recorded on his dashcam.

Officer Joshua Barber was patrolling Route 28 in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, when the single-vehicle crash happened Thursday, July 18, the Yarmouth Police Department reported in a Facebook post.

The SUV was “traveling extremely fast” and slammed into the pole after failing to navigate a curve, officials said. It then rolled back into the roadway and began spinning, first on its side, and then on its roof, video shows.

Power was also instantly knocked out for area residents.

The entire crash played out in just 19 seconds.

“As the officer approached the crash, two people emerged, complaining of injuries,” officials said. “The third person was trapped in the overturned vehicle and was assisted out by other responding officers.”

All three were taken to Cape Cod Hospital “with non-life-threatening injuries.”

The 23-year-old driver has been charged with operating under the influence, police said. The passengers were ages 25 and 26, and all three gave local addresses, officials said.

Yarmouth is about an 80-mile drive southeast from Boston.
