Resident requests disabled access at post office

THE POST OFFICE IN YOAKUM DOES NOT HAVE AN ACCESSIBLE ENTRANCE TO DISABLED PEOPLE. CONCERNED RESIDENTS HAVE PUSHED FOR A WHEELCHAIR RAMP.

YOAKUM - The City of Yoakum Post Office is one of the oldest buildings in town as service there has continued since being originally built in 1917. Despite its historical significance to Yoakum, some residents such as Mary Warren are calling for an update to its accessibility.

Warren has been leading the charge to seek supporters for a wheelchair accessible ramp entrance to the post office. The only public entrance is through a steep staircase, making entry difficult for those who use wheelchairs, walkers and canes. Warren has been using the latter two support items since injuring her legs, making her trips to the post office significantly more difficult.

Warren has sent letters to several state offices including Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton. Every government entity has suggested that the only the federal government and the post office itself has the authority to request such a change to the building.

The postmaster and employees were not able to comment on any discussion regarding the desired entrance.
