Yonkers Arts in partnership with the City of Yonkers is set to unveil a stunning new mural installation titled “We The People” along the Metro-North train line. This project aims to transform the community's landscape while creating an engaging art experience for commuters and visitors alike.
As a bustling metropolitan area, Yonkers has long been celebrated for its diverse and dynamic spirit. “We The People,” created by renowned artist CJ Priester, serves as a visual ode to the city's rich history and cultural significance. The mural depicts the city as a proud melting pot. A home for all that reflects its status as the third most populous city in New York state. Its location along the Metro-North train line symbolizes the city's function as a gateway between NYC and the Hudson Valley.
Each letter of the mural tells a story. As Yonkers draws its strength from the complexity of its history, geography, and residents, each letters symbolizes these strengths like “E” for epicenter and “R” for resilience. With the sum of these letters embodying not just a name, but our pride in being, “ Yonkers STRONG .”
Mayor Mike Spano expressed his gratitude for the combined efforts in creating this new art. He remarked that, “ This mural will spark joy and inspire conversation, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who experiences it .”
A mural built on morals
“We The People” is not just another outdoor art installation. It represents a commitment to innovation and sustainability . Installation engineers constructed durable metal walls to directly adhere to the retaining wall near the Yonkers Riverfront Library. The mural, spanning 8 feet tall and 50 feet wide, also features an augmented reality component. This experience, created by local artist Valen Daughtery, further sets this mural apart in a new and innovative way.
Mark your calendars for the official unveiling ceremony for “We The People” on February 16. The public is invited to attend the event at 2pm on the corner of Dock Street and River Street.
Ray Wilcox, Executive Director of Yonkers Arts, expressed his pride not only in this project, but the city in which it now resides.
This evocative piece reflects the unique spirit and diverse cultural tapestry of Yonkers, offering a visual celebration of the city's rich history, artistic vibrancy, and dynamic community. […] This vibrant artwork will undoubtedly transform the station into a more welcoming and inspiring gateway for Yonkers.
