The Yonkers Public Library announced the return of its Grow, Harvest, & Feast program, a beloved community staple aimed at reviving the culture of seeding and gardening across Yonkers.

This endeavor significantly reconnects residents with the joys and advantages of gardening. The program continues to fulfill the library's mission to make the community more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

History of Grow, Harvest, & Feast

Originally launched in 2021, the Grow, Harvest, & Feast program has successfully enhanced the local environment and green spaces.

With generous support from Con Edison and the Foundation for the Yonkers Public Library (FYPL), the program has achieved significant milestones such as the adoption of a native pollinator garden, the installation of accessible raised bed gardens, and the establishment of the Seed Library program.

    Seed Library

The Seed Library program seeks to cultivate an inclusive, affordable, and accessible gardening experience. Seed Library motivates Yonkers residents to actively engage in environmental wellness.

Seed Library patrons can obtain essential gardening materials—four seed packets of vegetables, herbs, and flowers—from YPL locations:

    • The main reading room at Crestwood Library
    • The Fine Arts section of Will Library
    • The third floor of the Riverfront Library

An exceptional feature of the program is its emphasis on a sustainable, cyclical process. After nurturing their plants and produce to maturity, gardeners are encouraged to harvest the seeds and pass them along for others to use next season, fostering a sense of bonding through community sharing.

    Getting involved with growing

Diverse engagement opportunities within the Grow, Harvest, & Feast program include attending virtual and in-person events and accessing gardening knowledge through Recommended Reads .

As a catalyst for positive environmental change, the Yonkers Public Library invites residents to partake in this initiative. Doing so bolsters the community's commitment for a greener and more environmentally conscious community.
