    Westchester County Public Pools Seeking Lifeguards for Summer

    Westchester County -owned pool facilities in Yonkers are seeking to fill lifeguarding positions for the coming Summer months . Specifically in Yonkers, this includes Sprain Ridge and Tibbets Brook park pools.

    Becoming a lifeguard provides individuals with an opportunity to develop valuable skills across multiple areas. Lifeguards operate as members of a larger team, fostering interpersonal communication and leadership development. Lifeguards have a unique opportunity to engage with the public by enjoying their time at the pool while contributing to a positive and safe experience. Training for lifeguards includes:

    • Rescue techniques
    • Injury prevention and treatment
    • Facility operation procedures
    • How to effectively enforce rules and regulations

    The Westchester County Parks Department is offering a limited number of training dates. Applicants must first complete a pre-test consisting of a 300-yard swim, 3-minute tread, and timed brick retrievals. They are then able to enroll in classes administered by the Red Cross. Pre-tests are scheduled for April 7 and May 5, with two 4-week series of classes being offered every Sunday until June 2. These pre-test and classes will take place at the Theodore Young Community Center in White Plains from 1 to 5 pm. Applicants must attend all four class sessions to receive a Red Cross Certificate.

    How to Apply

    All applicants must be 15 years of age by the end of the training course. There is a fee of $450 in order to register. Westchester County residents will receive preference in hiring. Applicants aged 18 or over will be required to submit to a background check. All applicants will be subject to pre-employment drug testing. Candidates are expected to have strong customer relations skills and may be required to work weekends or holidays. The County does cater to both those wishing to work full and part-time in this position.
