A common misunderstanding among New York residents, particularly in Long Island, divides those from Yonkers. This is something that many non-residents have mentioned before, and it is a language we hope never to hear again as loyal residents of Yonkers.

This geographical mislabeling goes beyond mere semantics; it underscores a broader disconnect in the perception of what constitutes New York. Yonkers, with its proximity to Manhattan, is often overlooked in the grand scheme of the state’s cultural and urban identity despite being the third-largest city in New York .

In the minds of Long Islanders for reasons unfathomable to those of us from Yonkers, consider our vibrant city a part of the enigmatic “upstate New York.” This misconception is not just a matter of misplaced geography; it reflects a broader dialogue about identity, belonging, and the persistent murmurs around Long Island’s aspirations for statehood .

To Islanders, Yonkers remains a mystery. Often lumped into the vague category of “upstate,” a term failing to capture the city’s true essence. The distinction as “upstate” seems to imply a separation not just by miles but by lifestyle, economy, and cultural affinity. This misleading oversimplification negates the nuanced mosaic of New York’s communities.

Even more deplorable is the burgeoning movement for Long Island to become a state of its own, fueled by the growing sentiment of disconnect among Long Islanders. This movement is familiar, having simmered for decades. Still, it has gained traction in recent years, fueled by political, economic, and cultural differences perceived as insurmountable when viewed through state governance and resource distribution.

The push for statehood is bold, but Yonkers is bold. Even Long Island’s desire for self-determination, a longing to carve out its destiny from “upstate” regions like Yonkers, takes a back seat to our size, strength, and vitality. Critics will argue that LI statehood would allow for a downstate resource politico-swamp. Long Island for Long Island! Or so we’ve heard them say to each other in Patchogue, Montauk, and Islip.

These cries must be a compelling call to action for Yonkers as Long Island pushes for statehood. Today, emerging in Yonkers—is a call for unity and strength. Our future will not exist in the margins of Long Island seeking to repress our city’s identity and significance.

All members of the Yonkers community must join forces at the state and national levels.

The objective is clear: a more united New York state – Yonkers will lead the charge.

We must affirm our place. Our voice. As Yonkers residents, we must continue challenging misconceptions and advocate for our recognition. Yonkers is a city with real people and dreams. Yonkers is a thriving city. We are more than simplistic categorizations of “upstate” or “downstate.” Yonkers’s struggles and triumphs mirror those of cities across America, which grapple with urban development, education, and community cohesion issues.

Whether or not Long Island eventually becomes its state, the discourse itself is a powerful testament to our collective journey for identity, representation, and a sense of belonging in the vast landscape of New York State.

In the end, Yonkers is not some distant land upstate but a vibrant city with its own story, challenges, and achievements. It’s time we acknowledge and celebrate it as such, bridging the gaps in our understanding and fostering a more inclusive, united.
