A Catholic high school on the Bronx/Yonkers border is closing down. Leaders with Saint Barnabas High School made the announcement Friday, citing growing financial strain. Students tell News 12 they are devastated and shocked. They say they have been left scrambling to figure out where they are going to school in the fall. The school just celebrated its 100th anniversary. School officials said in a statement they will work with students and their families on transitioning to neighboring Catholic high schools. In a voicemail recording, the school mentions they will be available Tuesday July 2 to talk with families about what's next. Read the full statement from the school below:
"It is with a heavy heart that a decision has been made that Saint Barnabas High School (SBHS) will cease operations and will not be reopening in September 2024. Despite a successful celebration of our 100th Anniversary, our school is unable to overcome the financial strain it has been under for many years. Over the past several years we have been challenged to meet rising operating costs, which led to this painful decision. SBHS is working with affected families to ensure that our students will be welcomed in neighboring Catholic high schools. The teachers’ union, in conjunction with the Archdiocese of NY, will assist the faculty in finding employment with other Catholic schools. Saint Barnabas High School thanks all of our parents, alumnae, donors, friends, and families for their support and loyalty over many years."
