Patrons of York County libraries could see some changes in the new year, including reduced hours at some locations.

York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert cited inflation as the main driver.

Libraries provide books and services for free or low-cost, which is an important part of the mission to ensure the community has access to resources, he said. However, back-office costs continue to rise.

"York County Libraries is exploring how we can evolve into a new service model that builds upon our libraries' collective and individual strengths, retains our dedicated and talented employees, and that enables us to continue serving our York County communities in a financially sustainable manner," he wrote.

Reduced hours, other enhanced services being explored

The library system might restructure or reduce hours at some locations based on its data research, Lambert said. It is not planning to close any of its locations.

"If needed, some may move within their same community area to more affordable spaces," he said. "However, we are hoping to keep them where they are currently."

Open hours would be based on when the community is using the libraries the most, Lambert said.

The library system also is exploring the use of other ancillary services, such as 24/7 book lockers for picking up and returning materials as well as enhanced Wi-Fi.

"Longer hours at other nearby libraries could also supplement service," he said.

Library services offered across York County

York County Libraries offers 13 full-service locations across the county, according to the website . It also has pickup and drop-off sites in Manchester and Springettsbury townships.
