Firefighters rescued three people, including a 9-year-old child, during a fire in Spring Garden Township, according to York County Area Fire and Rescue Fire Chief Dan Hoff.

The child, rescued from a second-floor apartment, was taken to WellSpan York Hospital, Hoff said. No information is available on the youth's condition.

Firefighters also rescued two adults from a third-floor apartment, a news release states.

Firefighters responded after 11:30 p.m. to the two-alarm fire in the 500 block of South Albemarle Street, according to Hoff and a Facebook post.

The American Red Cross has been called to help the victims. Eleven people — five of them are children — have been displaced, according to the fire department. Two units in the building had smoke and damage.

During the rescues, a mayday was called but was rapidly cleared, the news release states. No firefighters were injured.

The state police fire marshal is assisting with the investigation, Hoff said.

The following departments assisted with the response: York Township, West York, Conewago Township, York City, Hellam and Southern Area Fire and Emergency Rescue.
