Heat advisory issued for central Pennsylvania as heat index to soar above 100 on Wednesday

After several days of cooler temperatures, dangerous heat returns to central Pennsylvania on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in State College issued a heat advisory for the region from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024.

Heat index values of up to 105 degrees are expected in the area, the advisory said. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

The highest heat index of 105 degrees is expected in the Harrisburg area, according to the advisory. The heat index, for many areas in Pennsylvania, will potentially be the highest seen since July 16, the weather service said.

The downward trend of temperatures over the last six weeks will make Wednesday's heat more difficult to tolerate, the weather service said.

Some school districts are taking precautions by postponing athletic events.

Affected counties include Blair, Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juniata, Bedford, Fulton, Franklin, Perry, Dauphin, Lebanon, Cumberland, Adams, York, and Lancaster, according to the advisory.
