In a proactive move towards energy efficiency and community resilience, York Ready for Climate Action is partnering with WindowDressers to host a Community Build from Oct. 21 to 25 at St. Christopher’s Church in York, Maine.

This collaborative effort aims to provide residents of southern York County with insulating window inserts, offering substantial energy and financial savings and contributing to local sustainability goals.

WindowDressers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting energy conservation, has been instrumental in empowering communities across New England to enhance their homes' energy efficiency through custom-built window inserts. These inserts are designed to be easily installed and removed, while fitting snugly into existing window frames, significantly reducing heat loss during the cold winter months while allowing natural light to permeate indoors.

"We are thrilled to partner with WindowDressers for this important initiative," said Rachel Smith, local coordinator for the York Build and AmeriCorps VISTA at York Ready for Climate Action. "This Community Build not only provides practical solutions for residents but also fosters a sense of community engagement and environmental stewardship."

Interested residents must place orders for insulating window inserts by Sept. 8 at windowdressers.org/sign-up-for-inserts/ . These inserts are crafted from lightweight pine frames wrapped in clear plastic, offering an affordable and effective solution to combat energy waste. Financial assistance is available for those in need, with costs subsidized through a sliding scale based on household income. This ensures that energy-saving solutions remain accessible to all members of the community, regardless of economic circumstances.

Volunteers play a pivotal role in the success of the Community Build as they gather to assemble the window inserts under the guidance of experienced team leaders. The hands-on process not only creates a sense of accomplishment but also strengthens community bonds and imparts valuable skills related to energy conservation.

Both organizations welcome volunteers of all skill levels to join us during the Community Build. No prior experience is necessary, and it's a great way to make a meaningful impact while learning about sustainable practices.

To participate in the Community Build event or to place an order for inserts, residents can visit the York Ready for Climate Action website at www.yorkclimateaction.org or the WindowDressers website at windowdressers.org or contact Local Coordinator Rachel Smith at rachelsmithyrca@gmail.com. Both sites provide instructions on ordering and volunteering opportunities, aiming to streamline the process for community members interested in participating.

"By investing in energy efficiency measures like insulating window inserts, we not only reduce heating costs but also contribute to a more sustainable future for York County," remarked Rachel Smith of York Ready for Climate Action. "This initiative aligns with our broader efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change while promoting environmentally responsible practices in our community."

As October 21 approaches, organizers and volunteers are gearing up for what promises to be a transformative event for York. With a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement, the Community Build signifies a significant step towards a more resilient and energy-efficient future.
