A York man has been charged with murder in the death of an inmate at a state prison in Cumberland County on Tuesday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Shaquille Tyrin Gibson, 30, of York was the cellmate of the deceased man, 57-year-old Bernard Grover, also known as Kevin Beattie, of Philadelphia, state police said in a news release.

Staff at the State Correctional Institution Camp Hill found Grover unresponsive in his bunk, state police said.

The staff provided life-saving measures until an ambulance arrived and advance life support measures were continued, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Beattie was pronounced dead at 8:16 a.m. Tuesday.

Troopers responded to the prison to investigate the death and found that Grover had suffered injuries, state police said. His death is being investigated as a homicide.

"It was learned that Gibson and Grover were cellmates at the time of the homicide," a state police news release states.

An autopsy will be done at a later time to determine the cause and manner of death, state police said.

Gibson will remain at the state prison in Cumberland County, but he will later be transferred to another institution per the Department of Corrections policy, state police said.

Gibson has been an inmate at SCI Camp Hill since March 31, 2022, a spokesperson for the state Department of Corrections said in an email. He is serving time for robbery of a motor vehicle.

Gibson and Beattie have been cellmates since Feb. 11, the spokesperson said.

Beattie was convicted of burglary in Philadelphia County and was serving a 22- to 55-year sentence at the time of his death, the state Department of Corrections said in a news release. He had been at the prison since February 2023.

Second death reported at SCI Camp Hill

The state Department of Corrections announced Wednesday that another inmate died at the prison earlier this week.

Bryan Conrad, 50, was found unresponsive in his cell on July 1, a news release states. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 3 p.m.

Conrad was serving a 4- to 8-year sentence for failure to comply with registration of sexual offenders requirements in Cumberland County, the release states. He had been at the prison since April 6, 2023.

State police are investigating the death.

Check back later as this is a developing story.
