Hundreds of dachshund owners gathered July 13 with their pets in tow at Fred Fuller Park near Downtown Kent for the 25th annual Northeast Ohio Dachshund Picnic. The event, which organizers said is one of the largest dachshund gatherings in the country, provided the opportunity for community members to celebrate the breed through costumes, contests and games. Dogs were dressed up in all sorts of outfits, including singer Taylor Swift, lobsters in a crawdad boil, bees and cowboys, posing for pictures in a miniature Oscar Meyer Wienermobile.
A rural veteran firefighter's take on Ohio’s volunteer shortage
Ohio has nearly 400 vacant volunteer firefighter positions, according to job listings compiled by Make Me A Firefighter. Governor Mike DeWine announced last week that the state is turning up the heat on its recruitment campaign. It’s offering free training classes for volunteer firefighters and will begin airing 30-second public service announcements across the state. Tornado rips across corner of township on Aug. 6
A storm barreled through Northeast Ohio on Aug. 6 causing massive power outages and structure and tree damage. The national weather service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in the northeast corner of Richfield Township and moved east into Peninsula. It stayed on the ground for about five minutes, twisted and tore off massive trees on Columbia Road properties.

Power transformer manufacturer to open new plant in Ohio, creating 230 jobs
Westrafo has announced plans to open a U.S. facility in Trotwood, Ohio. The company, which produces integrated solutions for the energy industry, will use the new 231,000-square-foot plant to manufacture medium voltage transformers, allowing Westrafo to provide energy solutions for the U.S. market. According to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Westrafo will create 230 new jobs for the surrounding area. The project is expected to be completed in 2025, and by 2027, the facility will feature a production output of 12 GW per year.
