YORKTOWN, N.Y. — An approved boutique hotel project slated to be built in Yorktown Heights is up for sale.
The Gardena Hotel, which is approved to be a three-story, 18-room hotel on the northeast corner of Veterans Road and Commerce Street, is currently on the market for a little more than $2 million.
If built, the hotel, initially proposed in 2020, would be the first of its kind in Yorktown, featuring a café, a rooftop bar and grill, and off-street parking. The project was originally brought forward by Jack Xiao, a local business owner. The project would require demolishing the existing building at 1952 Commerce Street, which was most recently used as office space.
Xiao owns X Sushi Express on Commerce Street, operates Wild Fusion in Mohegan Lake, and formerly owned Stone Rose Steakhouse at the Jefferson Valley Mall.
He said the idea behind the project stemmed from the town’s growth and incoming developments.
“Yorktown is growing and there’s a lot of construction going on,” Xiao said. “New townhomes, new businesses, the Triangle Shopping Center being revamped. It’s going to be a new town and it’s going to be great.”
The hotel was slated to begin construction at the end of 2023 after the site plan was approved by the Planning Board last June.
Xiao said that the project has not yet begun, and is for sale, because “interest rates are ridiculously high.”
“Maybe if they went down a bit, I’d change my mind,” he said.
Xiao said the hotel would be a great asset in town whether he builds it or not.
“If I don’t build it, I’d love for someone else to,” he added. “I really think it would be a great project and great opportunity for Yorktown and investors.
“We need [the hotel] and it’s going to do so well in town,” he added.
