YORKTOWN, N.Y. - An age-restricted housing project that could contain anywhere from 85 to 250 units has been proposed for where vacant office buildings currently stand.

The project calls for the demolition of approximately 63,000 square feet of building space and redeveloping it into luxury multi-family apartments and townhomes for people 55 and over.

The 35.5-acre property, located at 800 East Main St., is currently zoned for the existing lab and office district, although the site has been vacant for years. The developer, AMS, is seeking to rezone the property to oblige residential living space.

The Town Board voted at its July 16 meeting that the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed project was complete enough to be entered into record.

“There is a lot of information in the [DEIS], both technical and otherwise, to vet and review and understand the project and for the public to do the same,” said town planning director John Tegeder.

The Town Board will hold a public hearing on the DEIS on Aug. 8 during its regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. at town hall, to “allow our public and departments to hear it and comment on it,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman.

“We are in desperate need of places for our seniors to be able to size down,” said Lachterman. “It has been referred to many times by our Senior Advisory Committee, which I sit on as the Town Board liaison. Some people worry about the cost [of luxury apartments], but this is what the market is bearing.”
