Spring sports have gotten underway for the Yorktown Athletic Department. With a slew of sports going on at the same time, most athletes can be found participating in something either on the track, at a field, or on the golf course. Athletic Director Ryan Knostman stated, “There are around 35-40 athletes participating in Track and Field this season and several Regional Qualifiers from last season are returning.”

Coach Onofre, the Head Boys and Girls Golf Coach, reported that he has 13 athletes in golf and that he has 5 returners for the boys team and another 5 returning for the girls. The Wildcat golf team entered their first tournament of the season. They attended the Weimar Invitational on Monday, February 26, 2024. In a field of 12 teams the Wildcats came in fourth. The team consists of Dalton Eckhardt, Cameron Willis, Trent Foerster, Colton Rogers, Kolton Eckhardt, and Connor Saunders. Willis led the team with a score of 85. They produced a team total of 356, missing out on bronze medals by two strokes to traditional powerhouse Columbus. Hallettsville won the tournament with a 342 total. Coach Onofre stated, “We are looking to get better not only as a team but as a group. Our goal for the year is to sweep the district with our girls and boys winning and to make a run at the state meet.” The girls team will be competing on Wednesday, February 28.

The baseball team has several games under their belt. Their current record is 2-3. The Wildcats defeated Victoria Gators Homeschool (253), and Bloomington (24-7) by large margins. Their losses came from Victoria Cobras Homeschool, Luling, and Falls City. They have 15 players on the roster for this season.

The softball team is young this year with 8 freshmen on the 12-player team. The Kitty Kats will look for leadership from their sole senior, DJ Maciel. The Yorktown squad has a current 1-5 record. They defeated Bloomington (6-5), while being defeated by Goliad, Boling, Hitchcock, Palacios, and Falls City.

Athletic Director Knostman stated, “Spring is a crazy time, and it is awesome to see our kids competing in so many sports.”
