    Gas leak near Boys & Girls Clubs in Youngstown

    YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Some frightening moments Wednesday morning for staff and young people at the Boys and Girls Club on Youngstown’s South Side.

    Police and firefighters were called after crews from the club and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department accidentally cut into an underground line connected to a gas well on the property.

    At one point, you could see a cloud of gas coming from the well.

    “The first thing we did was evacuate the building,” said Executive Director Jim Bird. “The second thing was we made that emergency management was called.”

    Within a half hour or so, a technician from the gas well company came and shut off the valve.

    No one was hurt. Everyone at the club was evaluated by medical staff for signs of exposure to gas and everyone was OK.

    The club will resume operations on Thursday.
