YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Youngstown State University has announced the hiring of Trevor Charpie as the 10th head baseball coach in the history of the Penguins program.

YSU Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo made the official announcement on Friday.

Charpie served as an assistant coach on the Penguins staff during the 2024 season. He began the campaign as an assistant coach and camp coordinator before being elevated to the role of primary pitching coach midway through the season.

“I am so blessed and grateful to be named head baseball coach at Youngstown State University,” Charpie said. “I would like to thank all the coaches and players I have had the chance to be alongside and who have helped me reach this point. We will work tirelessly to bring a winner to this community, and we will be relentless on and off the field. We are extremely proud to be a part of the Youngstown community, and our goal every day will be to make this community proud of Penguins baseball.”

Prior to arriving in Youngstown, Charpie served as the pitching coach at Golden West College in 2022-23.

“We are extremely excited about the future of Penguins baseball,” said Strollo. “We are distinctly aware of how important the game of baseball is to the Mahoning Valley and the great passion that exists for Youngstown State baseball within our community and region. We are deeply committed to enhancing and improving the program moving forward into a new era with Trevor leading the charge.”

Charpie pitched in the minor leagues from 2017-19 after a standout collegiate career that included stops at Tennessee, Saddleback College and Nevada.

In 2019, he reached the Double-A level with the Montgomery Biscuits, a Tampa Bay Rays affiliate. In a total of 42 minor league appearances, Charpie posted a record of 9-2 with a 3.47 ERA with two saves. He struck out 62 batters in 72 2/3 innings of work.

He also pitched three seasons in the Frontier League for the Joliet Slammers from 2020-22.
