YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Youngstown CityScape is the recent recipient of two local grants, announced July 2.

The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley awarded $10,000 through its general fund and the Western Reserve Health Foundation contributed an additional $20,000, to support purchasing equipment to help restore the urban tree canopy.

“Receiving these grants is a key step and indicates community support for our Mahoning Valley Tree Corps project,” said CityScape Executive Director Sharon Letson. “This funding will allow us to invest in the necessary equipment to start restoring our urban tree canopy and making a tangible impact in our community.”

A release from CityScape says the funds will be used to support the following projects:

    • 5,000 Street Trees: Over the next five years, 5,000 street trees will be planted, providing shade, improving air quality, and beautifying urban areas.
    • Urban Forestry Education: The project will include educational programs aimed at raising awareness about the benefits of urban forestry and engaging the community in tree planting and maintenance.
    • Emergency Tree Removal: Funding will also support emergency tree removal, ensuring safety and preventing potential hazards.
