YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — An explosion at a steel plant early Thursday morning was heard in several parts of Youngstown and Girard.

According to the Girard Police Department, it happened around 3 a.m. at Vallourec Star plant, when molten slag made contact with water which caused the explosion.

Police say the safety personnel at Vallourec told them everything was contained and that there were no injuries.

Fox 8 sister station WKBN fielded nearly a dozen calls from viewers who heard the explosion, saying it even shook their homes.

Both the Youngstown Police Department and GPD say they received numerous calls about the noise as well.

WKBN reached out to representatives from Vallourec Star who did not have any additional information.
