YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Knox BLDG downtown will host an art auction and a special screening of Chris Strollo’s 1996 film “The Apprazer” next weekend to benefit the Downtown Recovery Fund following the May 28 gas explosion that devastated the historic Realty Building.

Although the film was inspired by Youngstown 28 years ago, it parallels several recent events and organizers say it gives context to the rush to demolish Realty Tower , which many community members strongly opposed.

A synopsis of the film described it as, “An animated real estate agent made of metal junk is trying to pawn off the historic buildings of a once thriving Youngstown, Ohio before they are demolished. Commentaries from small business owners, artists squatting in condemned lofts, homeless individuals and city officials drive this short satirical film. Facts and fiction intermingle with surreal animation, historical footage and original music.”

Organizer Jacob Harver says “The Apprazer” is more relevant than ever.

“Residents, artists, and truly local businesses are the hearts of cities and all have been under attack in Youngstown through deindustrialization, suburbanization and the assault on our historic architecture,” Harver said.

He said we need to support the arts.

“Instead of useless street projects, we should be making the Mahoning Greenway and be an Amtrak stop again,” Harver said.

In addition to the Youngstown history depicted in the film, Harver said original art by prominent Youngstown figure Jim Traficant will be auctioned off at the event.

Works by Eric Alleman and Jason Van Hoose will also be included in the auction.

The screening and art auction take place Saturday, July 27 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the third floor of the Knox BLDG at 110 W. Federal St., above The Federal restaurant.

All proceeds will go to Realty and International Tower resident relief efforts through the United Way Downtown Recovery Fund. There is a $5 suggested donation for the event.
