YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A local cemetery gave people a chance to learn from the Mahoning Valley’s lesser-known history on Sunday.

Oak Hill Cemetary dates back to the 1850s. Buried in it are some of Youngstown’s most famous families.

A tour group at the cemetery on Sunday learned about some people who weren’t as well known.

The tour was led by a group of volunteers who researched those buried at the cemetery. Some of the people highlighted in the tour were Civil War veterans and immigrants during Ireland’s potato famine.

“It’s important to know that common people made a contribution in this Valley, in this city. People love to talk about the Wicks, the Pollocks. It’s other people that have done stuff in the city,” said Steffon Wydell Jones with Oak Hill Cemetary.

The next volunteer-guided tour will be Aug. 18, which will focus on veterans buried at the cemetery.
