Eugene Thompkins, 33, received the sentence from Judge Anthony D’Apolito following guilty pleas Feb. 29 to charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a third-degree felony, and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony.

The charges stem from a Sept. 19 traffic stop by Youngstown police where a semiautomatic rifle and a handgun were found in a car Thompkins was driving.

He is not allowed to have a gun or be around guns because of a 2013 drug conviction in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

The sentence was agreed upon by the attorneys in the case and upheld by Judge D’Apolito.
