FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – While the temporary closure of the splash pad may not be ideal for residents, the city says there’s nothing to worry about – the pad should be back open sooner rather than later.

“It was fun. it was cooling. a lot of people that came, I mean this whole place was full. now it’s empty,” said Fresno resident Rashell Richardson.

Richardson comes down to the Fink-white park daily with her family. She says the new $1.6 million splash pad has been fun and useful to the community.

“A lot of people don’t have air conditioning, or it broke down or the power goes out like and it cools everybody off and there’s no heat strokes or anything like that,” Richardson said.

Because the splash pad is temporarily closed, Richardson is spending time inside the park‘s recreational area. She says she wishes the circumstances were different.

“It’s too hot for it to be closed down.”

Parcs’ Director for The City of Fresno, Aaron Aguirre, says it shouldn’t be shut down for long.

“We’ve been working with our contractor in the manufacture of the splash pad equipment. those repairs are underway. and with all schedules that we’re seeing now, we intend to open this weekend with the goal being tomorrow, being back up and running,” he said.

Aguirre says the splash pad was closed because there was a leak with one of the plumbing fixtures.

“That is being replaced by the contractor. there is a cure process for approximately 24 hours. so once that cures and that bonding agent is ready to go, then we will fire the system, back up,” he said.

So people can get back to splashing around, and staying cool in this heat. The splash pad is still under warranty, so repairs won’t cost the city anything.

The park’s pool area will also be open for an extra two hours: from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday to accommodate for the closure.
