FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – California residents who have been affected by wildfire may be eligible for property tax relief, according to the California State Board of Equalization (BOE).

A 2023 report published by the Joint Economic Committee revealed that wildfires cause $147.5 billion in property damage per year. The state tax board wants to remind residents that despite these immense expenses, relief is available.

“As devastating wildfires continue to impact the lives of Californians, destroy homes, outbuildings, and property this year, we need fire survivors to know of the property tax relief available to alleviate some of their pain and help rebuild their lives,” BOE Chair Sally J. Lieber said.

The tax board says properties that have been affected by wildfire within Governor-proclaimed disaster areas that have experienced $10,000 or more in property damages may qualify for a reduction in property taxes. If taxes have already been paid, qualifying property owners could be eligible for a refund.

According to BOE, to qualify for relief property owners must file a claim with their County Assessor’s Office within one year from the date of damage or the time specified in their county’s ordinance, whichever is later. Eligible property owners may also request a deferral for their next installment without penalties or interest.

Property owners can visit BOE’s Disaster Relief webpage for more information.
