LEMOORE, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – An undercover sting operation in Lemoore found nine unlicensed workers allegedly taking part in illegal contract bidding.

The July 30 and 31 joint operation between the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and the Kings County District Attorney’s Office aimed to find unlicensed workers bidding on projects over $500.

“Our main objective in carrying out sting operations is to protect consumers from unqualified contractors,” CSLB Registrar David Fogt said. “That’s why we urge everyone to always verify a contractor’s license and obtain at least three bids before starting any home improvement project.”

According to CSLB, any bid over $500 requires a contractor’s license. Unlicensed workers who accept jobs over this amount can receive misdemeanor charges, up to six months in jail, and a $5,000 criminal fine. Those who are operating without a license can lead to administrative fines of up to $15,000.

The operation also found that two of the workers asked customers for excessive down payments. Contractors can only ask for 10% of the total contract price or $1,000, whichever is less.

In addition to accepting and creating illegal contracts, CSLB says the workers caught in this sting operation may face administrative or criminal charges for illegally advertising construction services without a valid license. Unlicensed workers can advertise for construction services if they clearly state they are not licensed and the total value of their work does not exceed $500.

Officials say the illegal projects put to rest during this operation included concrete work, landscaping, and tree service . The highest bid received was a $7,000 painting project.

According to CSLB, each of the nine workers will have to appear in court.

Those interested in learning more about the licensing process can attend a CSLB virtual workshop , available in both English and Spanish.
